Selwyn Snowfields

Selwyn Snowfields is the perfect family ski resort, with abundant car parking right at the slopes. Selwyn Snowfields offers something for everyone including alpine and cross-country skiing, snowboarding, tobogganing, snowplay or relaxing  in the beautiful mountain environment.

Selwyn Snowfields is the most Northerly of Australia’s ski resorts with a base elevation of 1492 m and a top elevation of 1614 m.

It is easy 25 minute drive from Gooandra Alpine along the Snowy Mountains Highway into the Kosciusko National Park and through the historic gold mining region of Kiandra where skiing began in Australia in 1861.

Selwyn Snowfields traces its origins to the skifields at nearby Kiandra. The more reliable snowcover at Selwyn Snowfields saw the establishment of a portable rope tow on what is now the Township Run in 1966. The remaining ski facilities at Kiandra were finally transferred to Selwyn Snowfields in 1978 (including Australia’s first T-Bar, which had been installed at Kiandra in 1957). In 2009 a triple chairlift finally replaced the T-Bars on the Township Run at Selwyn Snowfields.

Selwyn Snowfields trails cover more than  45 hectares, with runs to suit first-timers, intermediates and the more advanced snowrider.

Selwyn Snowfields is regarded as the best “learn to ski” resort with its wide, open, perfectly groomed terrain, perfectly suited to families and first timers.

The New Chum Beginners Bowl is regarded as the premier learn-to-ski area in Australia. 88% of the terrain caters to beginners and intermediates,   however the steeper gradient of the Racecourse Run provides some more challenging terrain for advanced skiers and boarders.

The resort has 11 lifts including chair lifts, pomas, t-bars, a platter and a rope tow (as well as one toboggan lift).  There is also a terrain park for those who want some air time or fun on various features. The resort also boasts 45 km of marked cross country trails.

The resort has developed extensive snowmaking facilities to cover 80% of the mountain which is the largest percentage of any ski area in Australia. Selwyn Snowfields is often the first  ski resort in New South Wales to advertise “100% access” to the mountain.
